According to the Book of Genesis, God created Eve, the first woman, from a rib of Adam. God took one rib from Adam and made Eve from this rib.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof. And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:21-24.
Because of this, some ask if man has one less rib than a woman or does a woman have one extra rib?
The answer is no.
Both men and women have the same number of ribs (which is 24 or 12 on each side of the rib cage).
Therefore does this contradict the Genesis account? The answer is no.
When the rib was taken out of Adam, he had a missing rib but this missing rib or lack of a rib was not genetically passed on to his children and therefore Adam's children would have the same number of ribs that all humans have, which is 24 or 12 on each side of the rib cage.
It is also possible that God could have replaced the rib that he took out of Adam with a new one but this is not specified in the Genesis account.
Adam could also, however, have lived the rest of his life on Earth with one less rib but this would not have been passed down to his children.
There is a rare disease in humans that can cause and extra rib to form but this can happen in both men and women.
Therefore, virtually all men and women today have the same number of ribs and there is no contradiction between the Biblical account and modern observation.
