Ancient China's Advanced Civilization

Archaeology, History

Ancient China's advanced civilizations developed along the Yellow and Yangtze River valleys as agriculture was established along these valleys of fertile soils. As humans dispersed from Mesopotamia and Babel, those who travelled eastward would venture through the mountains of Central Asia and eventually reached the Yellow River. Several less organized settlements and civilizations developed until the first truly organized dynasty within the long history of China. The Xia Dynasty was the first of a long succession of dynasties in Chinese history to appear along the Yellow River, which was named for the color caused by the excessive sediment in the flowing waters. Some dispute the Xia being the first dynasty and some believe that these are the remains of an earlier pre-Chinese civilization. Agriculture was the largest institution in ancient China and flooding was a major issue and many attempts were made to control flooding along the river valleys.

Writing systems, artwork, metallurgy, and many inventions were made by the ancient Chinese. The Xia Dynasty began around 2070 B.C., according to mainstream scholars and this date would be not long after the Genesis Flood and the Tower of Babel dispersion. The first settlers would need to travel through the mountains of Central Asia north of the Himalayas in order to reach the Yellow River and this is precisely what happened. There are ancient artifacts of these mountains and surrounding areas that eventually made their way to the Yellow River, particularly the Kunlun Mountains, where Chinese civilization is thought to have originated. These ancient peoples would travel gradually from Babel over the centuries until reaching the Yellow River.

Yu the Great was known as the founder of the Xia Dynasty and was responsible for controlling the massive flooding along the Yellow River to farmland and the landscape. Archaeologists have found evidence for the Xia Dynasty including the settlements, bronze artifacts, and burial grounds. The Xia Dynasty was the first to install a formal government, the first to use irrigation for agriculture, produce cast bronze, in addition to building a strong army, The Xia Dynasty also formed a calendar and invented a wheeled vehicle, and was strong in mathematics and measurements as evidenced by developing a compass, square, and ruler. International archaeologists have found evidence for a great flood along the Yellow River during the time period around 2,000 B.C.

The following Shang dynasty developed around 1800 B.C. by a leader named Tang and during this dynasty a formal writing system was created, in addition to advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and technology. The following Zhou Dynasty (1046 to 256 B.C.) began the use of iron and installed the Mandate of Heaven Doctrine, which gave Chinese emperors the "divine right to rule." The later part of the Zhou Dynasty was known for the establishment of Confucianism and Taoism. The development of the Silk Road would help connect Chinese civilization to western Asia.
