Biology
The human appendix has been called a vestigial organ and has been classified as a leftover remnant of evolution. Scientists, however, believe that the appendix may serve as a reservoir for good bacteria in the gut that help the body's digestive system. Located in the lower right section of the abdomen, the appendix is a four inch long tube that is part of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore the appendix is part of the system that helps humans digest food.
The appendix also contains a type of tissue associated with the lymphatic system, which carries white blood cells that are needed to fight infections. Scientists believe that the immune system cells located in the appendix have the function of protecting the good bacteria.
