Birds have unique characteristics that define the bird family: Their beak, their feathers, and their wings are some of the most distinctive characteristics of birds. These unique features allow birds to move across long distances and find food as well as migrate.

Migration patterns are one of the most unique behaviors of birds. Birds migrate in order to avoid cold temperatures and in order to find food. Some 40 percent of birds are known to migrate. How do birds know where to go each year and how do they somehow return home every year in the same location? Birds must have unique senses that allow for these behaviors. Birds can travel thousands of miles during their migration route and commonly travel the same route each year. Young birds often make the migration trip without ever having been before, but somehow, these young birds know where to go and where to come back to. Scientists aren't sure how birds perform their migration route and how they find their destination, but they believe that it is a combination of several senses and utilizing the position of the sun, the stars, and by sensing the Earth's magnetic field. How exactly these are used by birds to migrate is mostly a mystery, but most believe that birds use a combination of senses to navigate their route.

The arctic tern has the longest migration route in the world, at almost 50,000 miles per year. The bar-tailed godwit can fly for almost 7,000 miles non-stop during an eight-day journey. The northern wheatear travels 9,000 miles each way from the Arctic to Africa. Some non-flying birds migrate on foot or by swimming.

While many birds take the same migration route each year, some birds take different migration routes based on the weather and the available food supply. Climate change might affect the timing of migration routes throughout the year, according to several studies, as certain bird species may take their migration route earlier or later in the year based on climate patterns. Birds have been observed migrating above 23,000 feet in elevation over the Himalayas in harsh climate conditions.

During migrations, birds must avoid storms and predators, along with any other issue that may come up during the trip. However, birds somehow make the migration trip safely each year. Bird migration occurs twice a year. How do birds know to only migrate twice a year? Instinct? Bird migration is truly one of nature's greatest mysteries. However, those who believe in Creation know that this mystery is feature of a uniquely designed living thing by an Intelligent Designer.
