The Book of Romans is believed to be a letter written to the Romans by Paul the Apostle, a Jewish convert to Christianity and disciple of Jesus Christ. Paul (Saul of Tarsus) (lived 5 A.D.-64 A.D.) and was a Roman citizen. Saul changed his name to Paul (Acts 13). Much of Paul's work is also described in the Book of Acts. Paul was an anti-Christian who brought Christian believers to the authorities who declared preaching in Jesus' name illegal. After his miraculous conversion to Christianity on the Road to Damascus, Paul was struck blind for three days. His sight was restored by Ananias and Paul began his ministry where he suffered much persecution.
The theme of the book is to promote the message or Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Romans and the Christian Church at Rome. The letter is focused on both Jewish and Gentile Christians and gives instructions for the operation of house churches. The book stresses Justification by Faith, Salvation through the Gospel message, and was the inspiration of the teachings of Martin Luther. The letter was delivered to the Romans by Phoebe, a 1st century Christian woman and church deacon (16:1-2).
Romans 1 Paul, Rome, and Sin
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Romans 1:16-17.
Romans 2 Judgement, Law, Circumcision
1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
Romans 3 Faith and Righteousness
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;...........
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Romans 4 Abraham Was Justified by Faith
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Romans 5 Peace, Hope, Death, and Life
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6 Sin and Righteousness
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 7 Law and Sin
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Romans 8 Life, Spirit, Conquer
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 9 Israel and Faith
32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone; 33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Romans 10 Israel and Faith
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 11 Israel and Faith, Branches, Salvation
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
Romans 12 Be Transformed
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 13 Submit to Government, Love, Salvation
8 Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Romans 14 The Weak, Judgement, Faith
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
Romans 15 Glorify God
6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 16 Paul Greets Disciples, Gives Advice
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. 20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
