Escarpments and Creation

Escarpments and the Creation Model

by Owen Borville

More evidence of erosion from the Genesis Flood can be found at escarpments, or sudden rises in elevation on land or on the Earth's crust that extend for long distances. Escarpments are formed by erosion and can extend to continental sized proportions in scale. The Niagara Escarpment, over which Niagara Falls flows, the West Florida shelf, South Africa, Madagascar, India, and Australia include some of the major escarpments in the world. In fact, escarpments are found on every continent, including Antarctica. Many escarpments occur along the coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, while others occur on the interior of the continents.

The South African Escarpment, or the Great Escarpment of Africa, runs along the south Atlantic coast from Namibia extending across South Africa and ending in Mozambique for a total of 3,500 kilometers in length. One point in the escarpment reaches 3,000 meters or 10,000 feet in height, at the Drakensberg Escarpment. This South African escarpment is known as the Great Escarpment of Africa, and forms the rim of the African planation surface that covers much of the continent. The planation surface is an erosional surface, believed by creationists to have formed during the Genesis Flood by receding floodwaters. This escarpment is also located within 60 to 120 miles inland, from the coast, further indicating the grand scale of this erosional surface carved by the rising and retreating waters off of the continent from the Genesis Flood. The peninsula of India also has a similar escarpment that extends over 1,500 kilometers in length and reaches up to 2,200 meters in height. This escarpment also varies in distance from the coastline from 30 to 100 kilometers.

Coastal Brazil has an erosional feature called the Great Escarpment that separates the Brazilian Plateau from the coastal plain that rises up to 2,245 meters in height and extends 800 kilometers in length. The Blue Ridge Escarpment of the Appalachian Mountains and Eastern North America extends 500 kilometers long and rises about 600 meters in height. This escarpment separates the larger Blue Ridge Mountains from the smaller Piedmont region. Eastern Australia has one of the largest escarpments at over 2,400 kilometers long and up to 1,000 feet in height. Even Antarctica has several escarpments, including the 320 kilometer Usas Escarpment.

The uplift of the highest mountain ranges and plateaus on these continents likely pushed floodwater off the continents and into the ocean basins, greatly eroding these large escarpments near the edge of the continents. Many of these escarpments have been significantly eroded since their formation 4,500 years ago during the Flood, but are defined enough that one can observe and trace their structure. The uniformitarian geology model including millions of years of erosion simply does not offer a good explanation for the formation of escarpments. Since these erosional features are not occurring today, an event in the past must have produced these features, a catastrophic event such as a global flood. These escarpments form major features on every continent on Earth and give further evidence of the global flood described in the Book of Genesis.
