The parable spoken of by Jesus associated with the sprouting fig tree was given to his disciples to answer their question about the end times. This parable is recorded in Matthew 24:32, Mark 13:28, and Luke 21:29. As Jesus was predicting the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, his disciples wanted to know when these things would occur.
6 “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” Luke 21:6.
In addition to the Temple destruction, Jesus also predicted that future false prophets would come who claim to be the Christ and claim that the end is near, while instructing his disciples not to follow them. He also predicted future wars and uprisings but explained that these things must happen and that the end would not come just yet but would come later.
“Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Luke 21:8-9.
Jesus also predicted future earthquakes, great natural disasters, and signs from heaven.
10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:10-11.
In addition, he also predicted the future persecution of Christians.
12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. Luke 21:12.
Jesus also explained that there would be signs in the sun, moon, and the stars.
25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:25-28.
The parable of the fig tree spoken by Jesus explains that just as the fig tree sprouts, this is a sign that summer is near. Likewise, Jesus explained that when we see the things that he mentioned come to pass, including wars, natural disasters, and the persecution of Christians in the world, that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.
