The Geology of Genesis 1:1-10 (KJV)

Many are surprised to learn of the geology discussed in the Bible, particularly in the Book of Genesis.

The very first chapter of the Book of Genesis contains much geology, right from the first verse.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1 KJV.

We are told that God created the heavens and the Earth in the beginning and the next verse explains this creation further.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Genesis 1:2 KJV.

We are told that the Earth was originally void and without form, while complete darkness was present over the waters of the ocean, which originally covered the entire Earth. Many other planets in our solar system are like this now, void and barren with gases and liquids covering the surface.

The Spirit of God then began to shape the Earth to be more habitable for the life that would be created later. While other planets are void and barren, God sent His Spirit to shape the Earth and make it ready for life while making the Earth unique in the known universe.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:3-4 KJV.

Then we see the installment of the first light, which was not the sun but light from some other source, possibly from God himself or the Spirit of God. All we are told is that there was an original light source in the creation that God created and installed and that it was separated from the darkness.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. Genesis 1:5 KJV.

The Earth must have been rotating and revolving around a light source at this time because of the existence of evening and morning.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. Genesis 1:6-8 KJV.

The firmament, called heaven, probably refers to the sky, or water vapor-saturated atmosphere, that was separated from the surface waters but it also included the heavens where the stars are located and were created.

Some also believe that there was a protective layer of water, or "canopy" above the Earth's atmosphere or firmament that was broken during the Flood of Genesis 7:11 when the springs of the great deep opened up. We must realize that the environmental conditions of that time that would allow such a canopy are unknown and therefore we cannot prove whether this canopy existed or not other than from the scripture. Some creationists do, however, believe that there was a canopy. Unknown environmental conditions could have allowed a canopy without cooking the Earth.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:9-10 KJV.

This is the first appearance of dry land on Earth and the separation of dry land from the seas of the Earth.
