THE GLOBAL FLOOD OF THE BOOK OF GENESIS AND EARTH'S FORMATION AND MODIFICATION BY WATER

Most creationists believe that the Genesis Flood was a global flood that covered the whole earth at one time in history. Most secular academics and scientists, however, believe either in a local flood for the ancient Middle East or no flood at all. For those that do believe in the global flood, this flood was truly global and the evidence is substantial. The Flood was the most catastrophic event in human history and it completely changed the face of the Earth, both physically and environmentally. Yet despite much evidence, many mainstream academics refuse to acknowledge that a global flood even occurred. Those who deny the global flood of the Book of Genesis must ask why Noah would build an ark if the flood was local. He and his family could have migrated away from the Ararat region. Why was there a need to bring animals on the ark if the Flood was not global? Why were birds brought on ark if the flood was local? These are questions that anyone interested in this subject should ask. Most secular academics probably doubt that Noah and the Ark even existed at all and those that do commonly cite the idea of a local flood in the ancient Middle East and not a global one. However, Flood deniers are not new to the world as in Peter’s day there were flood deniers almost 2,000 years ago. Even some Christians and people of faith today deny the occurrence of the global flood. We are warned of false prophets and false teachers in the Biblical scripture of Second Peter:

"But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed". 2 Peter 3:5

According to Genesis 7, the flood waters covered the mountains to a depth of more than 15 cubits, or 23 feet. How is this possible if some mountain peaks today reach over 29,000 feet and there is not enough ocean water to cover them? The only explanation is that these mountains did not exist before the flood or were much smaller and were uplifted during the flood. The fact that many of these mountain peaks today have marine fossils on them indicates that these mountains were uplifted out of a marine basin or seabed. The flood completely reshaped the surface of the earth. It has also been noted that if the earth’s surface were flattened today or nearly flattened as a perfect sphere and polar ice was melted, there would be enough ocean water to cover the Earth by up to 2.7 kilometers in depth. This shows how much the mountains were uplifted during the flood and how much the ocean basins sunk downward, in addition to the amount of water added to the surface of the Earth. Psalm 104:8 in the New American Standard Bible gives reference to this when it states, “the mountains rose and the valleys sank down.”

Earth Formed by Water
Yes, there were flood deniers even in Peter’s day 2,000 years ago and those deniers continue today. According to Genesis 1:1, the earth was covered by water originally and dry ground did not appear on the surface until Genesis 1:9.  From Adam to the Great Flood more than 1,600 years had passed according to Biblical chronology and Genesis 7:11 describes the initiation of the Flood that covered the whole Earth. Today, scientists know that water at its smallest level is composed of two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule. Hydrogen is the most common element in universe while oxygen is the most common element in the earth’s crust.

Psalm 104 has many references to the presence and impact of water on the earth:

“5 He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. 6 You covered it with the watery depths as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; 8 they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them.”

The Flood of Genesis covered the Earth like a garment and the water level was higher than the mountains. As the waters receded, many of the erosional surfaces seen on earth today were carved by these waters. The receding waters even flowed over the mountains, something that cannot be explained today unless there was a worldwide flood covering the entire earth. Creationists today believe that the water gaps seen in mountain ranges are erosional features created by the receding floodwaters. The uniformitarian geologists have difficulty explaining these features.
