God's Covenant With Adam and the Fall

The Book of Genesis Chapter 2 describes the creation of the first man, Adam, and his placement by God in the Garden of Eden. The first covenant between God and Adam is also given here:

15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:15-17.

God also gave Adam every beast of the field and every fowl of the air (Genesis 2:19). He also created the first woman as a helper to Adam (Genesis 2:22).

The serpent would eventually tempt Eve and Adam to eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree and commit the first sin (Genesis 3:6).

The first punishment for the sin went to the serpent for the temptation:

14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel (Genesis 3:14-15).

Eve's punishment was given as follows:

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee (Genesis 3:16).

Adam's punishment was given as follows:

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return (Genesis 3:17-19).

Adam and Eve were then given clothing, or a coat of skins (Genesis 3:21), and were taken out of the Garden of Eden and placed in another location where Adam would till the ground (Genesis 3:23).

A flaming sword and cherubim was placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden to guard the way to the tree of life (Genesis 3:24).
