Timeline: 1406-1375 B.C.

The Book of Joshua recounts the time when Joshua led the Israelite Nation across the Jordan River to the Promised Land. Joshua was called by God to Lead the Israelites around 1400 B.C. Joshua would lead the Israelites across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land. Joshua was Moses' assistant who became the leader of the Israelite tribes after the death of Moses. Joshua was also one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan before the Israelites would return there and one of two who would faithfully accept God's command to take the land. The Jordan River is also where the future Messiah Jesus Christ would be baptized by John centuries later and where the voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Mark 1:9). The crossing of the Jordan River marked a turning point for the Israelites, and for the future Messiah. The name Joshua has roots in the name Yeshua, the Hebrew name for Jesus, meaning "Jehovah God is salvation." While Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, Jesus commanded the waters and wind to calm down. Both Joshua and Jesus command an army. While Joshua brought the earthly promised land, Jesus will bring the eternal promised land. Just as Joshua completed the Exodus led by Moses into the Promised Land, Jesus lead man into the spiritual Promised Land. The effort by Moses was close, but not quite enough, and Moses needed Joshua to complete the entrance to the Promised Land. Just as the Law of Moses was broken and many come up short of fulfilling the law, the law was completed by grace and truth from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Joshua Is Anointed Leader of the Israelites and Received God's Instructions: Joshua 1

Rahab Protected Israeli Spies: Joshua 2
Joshua sent spies ahead of the Israelites as they entered the Promised Land. Rahab and her family helps hide the spies and keeps them safe in defiance of her king (the King of Jericho), in order to allow the Israelites to enter the land safely. Rahab is commended for her assistance to the Israelites as she risked her family's life.
Rahab: Who Was She?

Miraculous Israelite Crossing of the Jordan River: Joshua 3
The Israelite Nation crossed the Jordan miraculously as God dried up the river to allow them to cross. The Israelites crossed the River while carrying the Ark of the Covenant.

Twelve Stones from Jordan River: Joshua 4
While crossing the Jordan, the Israelites were instructed to pick up twelve stones on the river bed for a remembrance of the crossing.

Circumcision of Israelites at Gilgal, Passover, Manna Ends: Joshua 5
While the Israelites that had entered the wilderness from Egypt had been circumcised, those Israelites born in the wilderness had not been circumcised and therefore needed to be and were circumcised. Passover was also celebrated. The Manna had also stopped coming as the Israelites began to eat the produce of Canaan.

The Walls of Jericho Fall: Joshua 6
The Lord instructed Joshua how to invade Jericho, which was the first city that the Israelites attacked after crossing the Jordan River.  He was instructed to march around the city once for six days with the armed men. Seven priests were instructed to carry trumpets in front of the Ark. On the seventh day, they would march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. After a long trumpet sound and a loud shout, all of the walls would fall down and the people of Jericho would die, except Rahab and her family. Then Joshua's men burnt the city and Joshua cursed the city by proclaiming that anyone who attempted to rebuild it in the future would be punished with his firstborn son or youngest child.

Achan's Sin, Ai Defeats Israel, Achan Punished: Joshua 7
Achan of Israel committed sin with "devoted things." Ai defeated Israel as the Lord's anger burned. Achan was punished by stoning.

Ai Destroyed, Covenant Renewed at Mount Ebal: Joshua 8
Joshua and the Israelites defeated Ai on their second attempt like Jericho and burnt the city to the ground. It was their second attempt as their first attempt failed because of the sin of Achan (Joshua 7), who took a "devoted item" from Jericho. Joshua instructed the Israelites to set an ambush behind the city. The men of Ai were lured away from the city, and the Israelites captured the central city and set it on fire.

Joshua and the Israelites renew their covenant with the Lord and built an altar to the Lord at Mount Ebal, while making burnt offerings and sacrificing fellowship offerings.

Gibeonites Spared: Joshua 9
Joshua spared the Gibeonites and agreed to their request to be servants, but put a curse on them that they shall serve the Israelites permanently after lying that they were from far away when they actually were from nearby.

The Sun Stands Still, Joshua's Long Day, Five Kings Defeated: Joshua 10
Five Amorite kings joined forces to attack Gibeon and the Israelites needed to fight back. Joshua commanded the Sun and Moon to stand still while the Israelites were fighting to allow Israel more time to defeat the Amorites. There has never been a day like it since. Five Amorite Kings were defeated, the southern cities of the region were conquered.

Northern Kings Defeated: Joshua 11
The northern kings of the region were defeated.

Thirty One Kings Conquered by Joshua Listed: Joshua 12
Listing of the thirty one Kings that Joshua and the Israelites conquered west of the Jordan River, in addition to the two kings conquered east of the Jordan under Moses' leadership.

Division of the Conquered Lands Among the Israelite Tribes (Joshua 13-22)
The conquered lands were divided among the Israelite tribes.

Land Still Remaining to be Taken, Division of Land East of Jordan: Joshua 13

Division of Land West of Jordan, Land Allotment for Caleb: Joshua 14

Land Allotment for Judah: Joshua 15

Land Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh: Joshua 16

Land Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh Cont.: Joshua 17

Division of Rest of Land, Land Allotment for Benjamin: Joshua 18

Land Allotment: Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, Dan, Joshua: Joshua 19

Cities of Refuge for Murderers: Joshua 20

Towns for the Levites: Joshua 21

The Levites were allotted towns to live in. When Joshua led the Israelites into the land of Canaan the Levites were the only Israelite tribe that received cities but were not allowed to be landowners, because "the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, as he said to them" (Joshua 13:33). Numbers 35:1-8 gives God's command to Moses to establish 48 cities for the Levites, of which six would also function as cities of refuge to which a manslayer could flee.

Eastern Tribes Return Home, Build Altar of Witness With West Jordan Tribes: Joshua 22
After serving their military oath west of the Jordan River, the tribes allotted land east of the Jordan returned to their allotted land. The eastern tribes were afraid of conflict with the western tribes, and therefore established an altar of agreement. And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness Between Us—that the Lord is God. Joshua 22:34.

Joshua's Farewell Address to the Leaders: Joshua 23
In his later years, Joshua gave a farewell address to the Israelite nation and encouraged them to follow the Lord.

Covenant Renewed at Shechem, Joshua Buried in Promised Land: Joshua 24
God's Covenant with Israel was renewed at Shechem and the Israelites were given a reminder of the great things that the Lord had done for Israel and encouraged them to continue to follow the Lord. Joshua is buried in the Promised Land at Timnath Serah, along with Eleazar, son of Aaron. Joseph's bones from Egypt were also buried at Shechem.

14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:14-16.
