In Matthew 5:14, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explains a parable describing his disciples as the Light of the World. This parable is also described in Mark 4:21-23 and Luke 8:16-18.
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16.
Jesus explains to his followers that they will be the light of the world by following the words that Jesus taught them and that their actions and works will be an example for everyone else. Non-Christians will see the works of Christians and will want to be believers themselves. Therefore, by showing a great example to others, the message of the Gospel will be spread to more people and the Father in heaven will be glorified. Followers of Jesus will be the light of the world not because of themselves, but because of their faith in Jesus and the message that he gave to them. One of the best ways to spread the message of the Gospel is by example and Jesus is explaining here in Matthew 5:14 that his disciples can spread the good news of the Gospel by following his words and allow others to observe them. Therefore, in the Light of the World parable, Jesus teaches one of the most powerful messages of the Gospel and that is that those who follow the message that Jesus sent will be the Light of the World and everyone will know this and see this by observation. Observers will recognize those who follow Jesus by their works and actions and the Father in heaven will be glorified. Believers in Jesus and the Gospel message are taught not to keep their faith in secret but to allow others to see and observe their faith. While private and individual prayer is a very important part of the faith in order to develop a strong relationship with God, it is just as important for believers to share their faith with others and create a fellowship with others. This is how the Christian faith is spread throughout the world.
