Llama Evolution or Creation?

by Owen Borville

The llama is a four-footed mammal classified with the Camelidae family. Their bodies produce wool on the exterior in the form of long, shaggy fur and llamas are also used for their meat.

Mainstream scientists claim that the llama originated in North America, however, creationists believe that the llama and its ancestors came off the Ark of Noah at Mount Ararat some 4,500 years ago and llamas spread from this location throughout the world. Therefore, llamas and their ancestors were prevalent in Asia and Africa before migrating to the Americas. There were more predators in Asia and Africa and therefore the llama could not survive there as easily. Explorers to the Americas likely transported the llama to these continents, both from the Eurasian bridge and possibly by boat across the oceans.

Although possessing similarities to the camel, the llamas are usually smaller and do not possess the classic humps that camels have. Llamas can grow up to 6 feet at the head and weigh up to 440 pounds. The average lifespan of a llama is 15-25 years. Llamas commonly like to live in herds with others as they are known as social animals. Llamas can communicate with each other by humming. Other varieties of the llama include the guanaco, vicugna, and the alpaca, all of which are found in South America and are part of the camelidae family. These camelids are herbivores, eating only plants, mainly grasses and shrubs.

Llamas have two toes and padded feet, which help in locomotion in rugged and mountainous territory. Llamas can also run up to 30 miles per hour. Llamas can have fur color of brown, black, white or a color shade in between.

Sometimes llamas spit at humans when threatened like camels do but llamas can be raised or trained not to do this.

Llamas were domesticated some 4,500 years ago, which complies with the creation model for animal distribution around the world from Mount Ararat. The similarities of the llama types and the camels of Africa and Asia give evidence of an origin from these regions. The shape and size of the llama has varied some within the last 4.500 years due to interbreeding between species types. The camel humps containing fat storage are an adaptation due to the extreme heat while llamas live in regions that are not as humid. The smaller size of the llama could also be an adaptation or variation produced by interbreeding with camel or llama-like species that have since become extinct.
