One Human Race: Biracial Twins

The existence of a biracial twin pair is surprising to most people. Can the same mother and father produce twins of different races? The answer is yes. Scientists explain that the skin color of a baby is determined by the genetic heritage of each parent of the child or twins. Genetic information determines the amount of pigment, or melanin, inside the skin of a newborn child. The birth of twins with different skin colors is rare but does occur. One twin can inherit more of the genes from the darker-skinned parent and the other twin can inherit more genes from the lighter-skinned parent. This occurrence of biracial twins from the same parents gives evidence for the creationist belief that all humans are of the same race-the human race.

In other words, all humans are descendants of a single pair of humans, Adam and Eve as included in the Book of Genesis, who were created with the genes and genetic material of all humans. Adam and Eve were created by God with all of the genetic material in humans today, including skin color, hair color and texture, genetic health and physical appearance. Variation and mutations caused differences over time. Therefore, it is not likely that Adam and Eve were both Caucasian white, as depicted in conceptual illustrations and the media, but rather could have been darker skinned. If Adam and Eve carried all of the ethnic characteristics of today's humans, it is likely that they were not as light-skinned as assumed by today's popular culture.

If all humans are descendants of the same human pair, then why are there such ethnic or racial differences in different parts of the world? For example, peoples originating from Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia are mostly light-skinned, while peoples originating from Africa, India, and Indonesia are mostly darker-skinned. East Asian and Pacific Islanders also have a unique skin color between light and dark-skinned. We know little of the ethnicity of pre-Flood humans, or humans that lived between the creation of Adam and Eve and the Genesis Flood 4,500 years ago (Genesis 7).

The Genesis Flood killed all humans with the exception of the eight who were spared: Noah, his wife, his three sons, and his son's wives. As the world began to repopulate with humans after the Flood, the Book of Genesis explains how all humans had a common language and lived near each other. After the Tower of Babel incident (of Genesis 11), where the different languages of the world were established, humans spread out throughout the world.

As humans settled in different parts of the world, their decedents in particular regions of the world likely spread similar genetics throughout their generations and distinct ethnicities and exterior appearances likely developed. In many parts of the world, cousins marry and produce children with closer genetics than non-cousins and this practice would ensure that future generations in a particular locality or region became closer in racial ethnicity.
