The Origin of Primates in South America

by Owen Borville

The South American continent has a diverse collection of animal species, and the topic of the origin of these species is interesting, particularly from a creationist viewpoint. If all humans and animals spread from the Middle East region after the Genesis Flood and the Tower of Babel incident, creationists must explain how humans and animals arrived to South America. A likely explanation is that animal species were transported to South America by humans on boats. As humans spread from the Middle East region around the world after the Genesis Flood and Tower of Babel incident, the art of shipbuilding was transferred to future generations. Humans could travel across the oceans after the Flood and could transport animals with them.

Evolutionists believe animal species, including primates, "rafted" to South America from Africa on vegetative material including tree logs and plant material blown away by storms. How could these animal species survive on vegetative rafts for so long without food, in addition to storms at sea and turbulent ocean waters? It is ironic how evolutionists deny the global Genesis Flood, including Noah's Ark, saying that it was impossible but believe that animals could have "rafted" across the ocean thousands of miles for a few weeks. Remember, the Ark didn't need to travel around the world, but rather it only needed to float on the floodwaters above the Ararat region for approximately one year. The rafting theory is very unlikely and the human transport theory of species is much more likely.

Why do evolutionists not like the human transport theory? The answer is that evolutionists need millions of years to support their origin model for the Earth and life on earth while human transport of species does not require millions of years. Creationists also dispute evolutionist methods of radio-isotope dating of fossils, which assign the oldest South American primate fossils at as much as 26 million years old or older. Human transport and species introduction to New World continents occurred within the last 6,000 years, according to the creationist model, and eliminates the need for millions of years of "raft travel". Raft travel itself also does not require millions of years either but evolutionists need an explanation of how primates came to South America after originating in Africa, according to evolutionist doctrine.
Evolutionists also believe that the South American and African continents were joined together "110 million years ago" according to their plate tectonic theory, but split apart before primates evolved, therefore eliminating the evolutionist theory of travel by land.

The human transport theory of animal species supports the creationist model and time frame of 6,000 years. Many species have been introduced to South America and the New World, some with disastrous results as some new species do not mix well with others. Some theorize that the ancient Polynesians reached South America, transporting animals and crops with them while taking animals and crops back to the Pacific Islands. The transport of species by humans by boat, particularly from Europe, Africa, and Asia to South America is the most reasonable explanation for species origin in the New World. The Siberia-Alaska land bridge theory for human and animal migration to South America has been proposed by both evolutionists and creationists and is entirely possible, particularly during lower sea levels caused by the ice age, however transport by boat is equally as possible. A combination of these two theories is possible, however what would cause such unique species to travel so far from Asia to South America within a few thousand years. In particular, what would cause species that normally do not travel far to travel thousands of miles across the continents within a few thousand years. Therefore, the human transport theory by boat remains the strongest argument. The Polynesian migration to South America is a newer theory that is very possible, considering that the Polynesians had explored a large portion of the South Pacific Ocean, extending to Easter Island.
