Jesus explained the Parable of the Hidden Treasure in the Field in Matthew 13:44:
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Matthew 13:44.
In the parable, salvation and the Kingdom of Heaven is compared to the treasure in the field. When the man found it, he was willing to sell everything he had in order to buy that field. Regardless of the value of his possessions on Earth, nothing was worth the value of the joy he received in finding the new treasure he found in the field. It was not even worth keeping his old possessions, because he sold all he had and he bought the field. Salvation and the Kingdom of Heaven is so valuable and brings such joy to a man that nothing on this Earth compares to it. Once a man finds that joy, he loses the joy for all things in this world: all material possessions and even every relationship he has in this world. If a man continues to enjoy his possessions on this Earth, he will not have joy in the Kingdom of Heaven and cannot a part of that Kingdom. Jesus also said that if a man is not willing to leave his family and follow him, that man cannot be his disciple (Luke 14:25-27). Just as Jesus left his family on Earth to pursue the mission of His Father in Heaven, one must be willing to leave everything he or she has in order to seek the Kingdom of Heaven. The joy received in experiencing the Kingdom of Heaven will be greater than anything one possesses in this world.
