Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders: Matthew 7:24-29, Luke 6:47-49

Bible

Jesus told the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders to his disciples, as recorded in Matthew 7:24-29 as well as in Luke 6:46-49. In the parable, Jesus describes a wise builder who builds his house on a rock and when the rain, floods, and winds came to beat on the house, the house stayed intact and was not damaged. Jesus also describes another builder, a foolish one who builds his house on sand and when the rain, floods, and winds came, the house fell. The parable is intended to symbolize those who build their faith on the teachings of God in the Bible scriptures versus those who build their faith and life on other doctrines. Those who build their faith on the teachings of the Lord of the Bible will experience success and blessings in life as they follow God's commandments and teachings. Those who build their household on God's teachings will have a strong and prosperous family while those who do not will experience pain and suffering in their family and household and not receive the blessings that are available to them.

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. 28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Matthew 7:24-29 KJV.

Luke 6:47-49 also includes the Parable, but only mentions a flood and stream without mentioning rain or wind. Luke also describes the builder digging deep for the foundation on the rock and the foolish builder building "without a foundation" instead of on sand. However, the meaning of the parable is very similar.

47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. Luke 6:47-49 KJV.
