Seal Evolution or Creation?

The semi-aquatic mammals commonly known as seals are classified into a group called the Pinnipeds, which also includes the sea lions and walruses. These animals spend time both in the water and on land. Pinnipeds are believed to have originated on land from land-based animals and through 50 million years of macro-evolution to their current state. Evolutionists today believe that the pinniped lineage is most closely associated with bears. Like whales and dolphins, evolutionists and mainstream scientists believe that pinnipeds branched off from their land-based ancestors 50 million year ago and gradually lost their legs while gradually acquiring features of aquatic mammals, such as limbs that serve as flippers and aid in underwater movement along with streamlined bodies. Seals range in size from one meter long and 45 kilograms to five meters long and 3,200 kilograms. Seals spend much of their time in the water but come above the surface on shore to mate, give birth, and to escape predators such as sharks. Pinnipeds have a layer of fat, or blubber, that keeps them warm just as the Cetacean group of whales and dolphins.

Evolutionists claim to have found their "missing link" between terrestrial mammals and pinnipeds with the 2007 discovery of the Puijila darwini, an extinct species that supposedly lived 21-24 million years ago. However, this particular species had four legs and closely resembles the modern otter. Therefore creationists would explain that this is not a transitional fossil from land mammals to the pinnipeds, but a unique species or kind. Puijila did not have flippers and therefore cannot be considered a "transitional fossil."  The discovery was published in the journal Nature and other prestigious mainstream scientific publications while being hailed as the "missing link" between land mammals and pinnipeds. However, creationists point out that the disagreement with evolutionists is about interpretation and false assumptions. Evolutionists and mainstream scientists assume that all life that we observe today "evolved" from simpler forms over tens of millions of years of time or even hundreds of millions of years of time. Most extinct fossil discoveries are interpreted by evolutionists as a transitional fossil from earlier less developed species to more modern and more developed species. Creationists insist that evolutionists have never found a "true" transitional fossil of any species in 160 years since Charles Darwin's 1859 work, The Origin of Species, and have only found unique species that were created during the creation week and look much like their original forms.

Creationists believe that all species were created during a week-long creation event about 6,000 years ago by a supernatural creator who creatively designed all life on Earth. All fossils that we observe today are remains of species that still exist or are remains of species that were originally created during the creation week and have since become extinct. Therefore, when evolutionists find an extinct fossil from a species that does not exist today, the likely assumption is that this is a transition along the evolutionary line or path. Creationists believe that many unique species that were originally created during the creation week have since became extinct due to changing environmental conditions, most famously the various dinosaur species. Creationists believe that a global flood that occurred less than 5,000 years ago not only destroyed all life on Earth's surface and preserved many fossils within stratigraphic layers, but also the environmental effects of this catastrophic event created new conditions on Earth in which many species could not survive, including the dinosaurs, which are believed to have gradually become extinct after this Flood. Therefore, Puijila darwini is not an ancestor of the seals or pinnipeds but a unique species that was created during the creation week 6,000 years ago. If there is any association between Puijila and Pinnipeds it is that both were designed by a Powerful and Unique Creator that included similar styles within the observed creation.
