An unconformity is the contact between older rock layers or strata and younger sedimentary rock layers in which at least some erosion has removed some of the older rock before deposition of the younger rock.
A disconformity is a specific type of unconformity or hiatus in sedimentary layers where the layers above and below an erosional boundary have the same orientation (often horizontal). Likewise, disconformities may be difficult to recognize.
An angular unconformity occurs when sedimentary layers have been tilted at an angle, eroded, and then overlain by horizontal sedimentary layers.
A nonconformity is a type of unconformity in which young sedimentary rocks lie on top of older metamorphic or intrusive igneous rocks.
