Unnecessary (Vestigial) Organs a Product of Evolution?
by Owen Borville
Evolutionists claim that certain body parts in humans and animals are unnecessary and are a leftover product of evolution. Evolutionists once identified up to 180 different vestigial organs in humans. However, over time as medical science progressed, scientists have found uses for these organs. Creationists have countered the evolutionists by explaining that these named vestigial organs have uses, but that their use may not be known at the present time.
The human appendix is one of these organs along with the hip bone in the whale. Scientists believe that the appendix may serve as a reservoir for good bacteria in the gut that help the body's digestive system. The whale hip or pelvic bone can help during mating, according to recent studies, and therefore a body part that was once thought to be useless is now seen with a function. Other vestigial organs in humans include the muscles of the ear, wisdom teeth, the coccyx (tailbone), and body hair. All of these continue to have functions and are part of the design of humans, not unnecessary evolutionary leftovers.
The tailbone is a triangular-shaped bone located at the end of the spine that serves as an attachment point for tendons, ligaments, and muscles and therefore is part of the human body design. It also functions as an insertion point of some of the muscles of the pelvic floor. The tailbone also supports and stabilizes a person while he or she is in a sitting position, and therefore is part of the design of the frame of the body. Evolutionists claim that the tailbone is a remnant of a former tail but this is based on the assumption that humans evolved from an animal with a tail. The tailbone, however, was designed as a connecting point for the spine, tendons, ligaments, and muscles while supporting these parts of the body.
Wisdom teeth are considered vestigial and unnecessary by evolutionists, however, they can be useful to those who have them. Despite sometimes being removed, wisdom teeth can only aid in chewing food if they grow properly and therefore are not useless. Wisdom teeth are another part of the design of the human body. Evolutionists argue that wisdom teeth are a product of evolution that is not needed anymore because of a change in human diets, but that does not explain how wisdom teeth appeared in the first place. The design of the human body allowed for the growth of wisdom teeth.
Body hair provides protection, regulation of body temperature, and facilitation of evaporation of perspiration. Hairs also act as sense organs.
Ear muscles have been mentioned as vestigial, as humans can't pivot their ears like many animals can. However, ear pivoting is not essential to human life. These muscles must serve another purpose.
