Zechariah Predicted Jesus the Messiah
by Owen Borville
The prophet Zechariah wrote of the coming Messiah some five centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ.
I am going to bring my servant, the Branch...and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day. Zechariah 3:8-9.
Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord. 13 It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two. Zechariah 6:11-13.
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9.
And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. Zechariah 12:10.
On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity. Zechariah 13:1.
The prophetic words were fulfilled when Jesus requested a donkey and a colt shortly before entering Jerusalem, as described by the Gospel of Matthew:
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away. Matthew 21:1-3.
As Jesus and the disciples entered Jerusalem on the donkey and the colt, large crowds of people followed and shouted:
"Hosanna to the Son of David" and "Hosanna in the highest heaven." (Matthew 21:9).
Hosanna is a Hebrew expression that means "save" or "we pray" and is commonly used as a form of praise to express joy or adoration. The word Hosanna is also related to the Aramaic word meaning save, rescue, or savior."
Matthew also records that those in the crowd following Jesus also shouted "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord." (Matthew 21:9). This quote was also written by the prophet who wrote the Book of Psalms (verse 118:26) centuries earlier and the crowd was obviously associating this prophetic verse with the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
The prophet Zechariah continues the prophetic words concerning the coming Messiah:
He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. Zechariah 9:10.
